What is a Campus Security Authority (CSA)?
Any Mason employee who is not a staff member in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is considered a “Campus Security Authority (CSA)” and must promptly report all crimes to Mason Police. At the request of a victim/survivor, identifying information may be excluded from a report (e.g., names, initials, contact information, etc.).
CSAs must report all Clery Act Crimes as soon as possible to Mason Police using at least one of the following options:
1. Calling Mason Police directly at 703‐993‐2810 (in an emergency, immediately call 9-1-1)
2. Completing the CSA Crime Statistics Reporting Form: Click here for CSA Crime Statistics Reporting Form
3. Emailing Mason’s Clery Compliance Coordinator at email@example.com
When interacting with a person reporting a crime, CSAs should gather enough information that would provide sufficient detail to properly classify the incident. CSAs are not responsible for determining authoritatively whether a crime took place, and they should not try to apprehend alleged suspects of crimes.
There are two types of individuals who, although they have significant responsibility for student and campus activities, are not campus security authorities under Clery: (1) Pastoral counselor (functioning within the scope of that recognition as a pastoral counselor). (2) Professional mental health counselor (functioning within the scope of his or her license or certification).
See University Policy Number 1412 for Mason’s policy on reporting Clery Act Crimes and prohibited sexual conduct.
All CSAs must be aware of their specific responsibilities for reporting crimes that come to their attention. Self-directed training is available at http://police.gmu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Campus-Security-Authority-CSA-Training_September-2021.pdf. Training is also available through Mason LEAPS at https://gmu.csod.com/LMS/catalog/Welcome.aspx?tab_page_id=-67&tab_id=-1.
