Call Trace Procedure

University *57 Call Trace Procedure

Instructions by Phone Type.

Student Residence Phones.

Please note that the call must be in progress to complete the trace. You cannot trace a call that has been disconnected.

  1. Pick up the telephone.
  2. Ensure call is on the line.
  3. Press flash switch hook quickly and release.
  4. Press *57 immediately.
  5. Caller will come back on the line.
  6. Hang-up on caller.
  7. LOG CALL (time, date, what was said, background noises, etc.)
  8. Call GMU Police to report call and verify trace (703-993-2810)
Faculty, Staff and Administrative Phones.

For single line phones WITHOUT link key; call must be in progress.

  1. Pick up the telephone.
  2. Ensure call is on the line.
  3. Press flash switch hook quickly and release.
  4. Press *57 immediately.
  5. Caller will come back on the line.
  6. Hang-up on caller.
  7. LOG CALL (time, date, what was said, background noises, etc.)
  8. Call GMU Police to report call and verify trace (703-993-2810)

NOTE: After flash hook has been completed, caller will automatically be placed on hold until *57 has been completed.

For single phones WITH link key; call must be in progress.

  1. Press link key.
  2. Press *57 immediately.
  3. Hang-up on caller.
  4. LOG CALL (time, date, what was said, background noises, etc.)
  5. Call GMU Police to report call and verify trace (703-993-2810)

NOTE: After link key has been completed, caller will automatically be placed on hold until *57 has been completed.

For multi-line phone WITHOUT link key; call must be in progress.

  1. Press link key.
  2. Press *57 immediately.
  3. Hang-up on caller.
  4. LOG CALL (time, date, what was said, background noises, etc.)
  5. Call GMU Police to report call and verify trace (703-993-2810)

For multi-phone lines WITH trace key; call must be in progress.

  1. Press trace key.
  2. Hang-up.
  3. LOG CALL (time, date, what was said, background noises, etc.)
  4. Call GMU Police to report call and verify trace (703-993-2810)

NOTE: After transfer has been completed, caller will automatically be placed on hold until *57 has been completed.
